Lithium ion batteries haven’t become more dangerous in recent years. But with more and more devices being powered by the batteries — and with portable technology becoming increasing prevalent — more opportunities for problems have developed. That, at least in part, is a reason that the potential hazards are more on the public’s radar, said Kent Faith, CEO of SpectrumFX.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7’s exploding battery has pilots and aviation industry experts concerned about lithium-ion batteries catching fire on aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration banned Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones from being on airplanes because of the potential of explosive batteries. Because those fires burn so hot, there’s new technology, built in Tulsa, available that the maker says is ideal for putting out the phone fires.
