LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Team Owlpal Healthcare from the University of Tulsa won first place in the Undergraduate Division at the 2014 Donald W. Reynolds Tri-State competition in Las Vegas, beating teams from Oklahoma, Arkansas and Nevada to win the $30,000 top prize.

Owlpal team members Jordy Albert and Mackenzie Ward wrote and pitched a business plan around monitoring technology for families of children with asthma. Owlpal also won first place in the Oklahoma competition in April. Claire Cornell was faculty advisor.

Driven Analytics from the University of Oklahoma won second place in the Graduate Division of the Tri-State competition, earning $20,000. The Driven Analytics team of Stephen Soroosh, Jake Elliott and Mitchel Walser pitched a business plan around a vehicle monitoring system that provides car owners with real time data such as diagnostics information and maintenance reminders.

Driven Analytics also won second place in the earlier Oklahoma competition. Ron Bolen was faculty advisor.

In addition to the Tri-State team competition, Owlpal’s Ward also won $2,000 as winner of the Undergraduate Division pitch competition.

Conducted at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, the Tri-State competition featured the top two teams from Governor’s Cup competitions held earlier this spring in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Nevada.

Other Oklahoma teams competing in the competition were AeroHead from the University of Tulsa, Graduate Division, and Valoshade, also from TU, Undergraduate Division.

The Tri-State competition is underwritten with support from the Las Vegas-based Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
